The first hospital in East Africa, Mengo Hospital
was opened in 1897, in Kampala, Uganda, by the Church Missionary Society. Over 110 years this hospital has grown from a 12 bed clinic to a 350 bed medical facility, serving both urban and semi-rural populations, and has been widely known in sub-Saharan Africa for its medical care and dedicated staff. It has expanded, through donations from interest groups, to provide specialized care clinics
in orthopaedics, ophthalmology, tuberculosis, AIDS, and dentistry. In addition to patient care, Mengo Hospital is the home to a school of nursing and midwifery for 250 students, laboratory technology course for 90 students, and a school of ultrasound and radiology technology.

Friends of Mengo Hospital (Canada) Friends of Mengo Hospital (Canada), a registered Canadian charity, was formally established in 2001 in Victoria, British Columbia. We are a non profit organization with 100% of our fundraising going towards projects. FOMH(C) directs its support towards sending volunteers, training Ugandans, the provision of medical equipment, and the funding of patient care. The programs and projects which FOMH (C) support are closely aligned with the strategic plans of the Mengo Hospital’s administration. Such programs include – TB and HIV/AIDS Clinic, counselling and home care services Occupational Therapy Department and services for handicapped children Saturday Club and support for children and their caregivers (often ‘jjajjas’ or grandmothers) Dental clinic and dental services Nursing School Improvements to infrastructure, directly and indirectly, to better provide patient care FOMH(C) supports interest groups in Canadian communities who wish to raise funds and awareness, or to volunteer at Mengo Hospital.
