School of Nursing and Midwifery

Mengo Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery was founded shortly after the hospital opened. The first students were all midwives with nurses following a few years later. At first there were fewer than 20 students. In 2009  250 young women and men, about a third of the total,  entered a combined course of nursing and midwifery. This better prepares them to work in the outlying hospitals and clinics. Training at the government hospitals is free but the reputation of the Mengo School leads many to make great sacrifices to get accepted there. The fees, $2500 for the 2 ½ course,  include the costs residence, food, tuition and uniforms.  This is a huge sum in Uganda so many students struggle to complete the course.
Finding a way to financially support students is a priority.  Recently  FOMH(C) received a generous cheque from the BC Nurses Union which we are using as seed money in create a bursary.  Any money donated to this cause will be invested so the income can, in time, provide an annual stipend to a worthy student.

Disabled Children
