List of urgent needs for Community Building
Programs for AIDS/HIV patients
Dr. Edith has challenged us with a long list of urgent needs for
social support of AIDS patients. The success of antiviral medication has
brought hope and good health for so many poor patients but the major
donors do not provide funding to cover programs to help them return to
work, feed their families etc. The following wish list includes many
worthwhile suggestions that the clinic staff have identified.
- Enlarge the Saturday Club to care for 25 more orphans
(currently
there are 65 enrolled) Cost = $25,000/yr.
- Train and provide lunch and transport for 6 expat patients who
will volunteer to help mentor and support new patients cope with
their illness.
Cost =$6,000/yr.
- Provide food for AIDS children attending the Paediatric Clinic.
Cost = $4,500/yr.
- Provide nonHIV drugs (antimalarials, antibiotics, pain medication)
Cost =$12,000/yr.
- Funds to cover expenses of pastoral care volunteer to visit sick
patients in their homes. Cost =$ 3,000
- Funding to pay secondary school fees of children on AIDS medication.
Cost =$2,500
- Home based care kits for palliative care of patients. Cost= $7,000 a year
Hospital Support
Many projects are undertaken by those who visit Mengo Hospital which support the ability of the staff to provide compassionate and quality medical care to the people of Kampala.
Some of the general projects we have undertaken include:
- Sterilization equipment for operating theatres
- Mosquito nets for the children's ward
- Provision of wheelchairs, hospital beds, medical equipment, crutches, linen, and clothing for newborns
- Teaching on the medical and nursing wards
- Training in the use and maintenance of equipment
- Provision of a library for the nursing school, including shelves, books and reference material, and computer terminals
- Refurbishment of Luke- and Katherine Wards
